October 20 is very special as well as a memorable day for
Jagannath University. 10 years ago, It became an autonomous public university
from a college controlled by National University. Spreading knowledge, no
doubt, it has been performing well and contributing the nation for 157 years as
an educational institute and 10 years as a university, but there are a lot of
positive and negative sides surrounding it. I have a discussion about that
below.
First of all, its infrastructure. This crisis solely begot
many more problematic issues. Classrooms, for instance, are not sufficient to
take all classes as many departments have been opened already and some are in
process to be added. It is not difficult to conceive the ambivalent situation,
despite a public university, it has no sufficient space though many departments
are functioning simultaneously. In addition, other crucial parts including
seminar library, laboratory, common room and language club are not being
possible to be added due to the crises. Therefore, the environment of study is being
limited day by day because proportion of students are being increased every
year.
Then, another big problem is the bad practice of nasty
politics in campus. Although it is a common problem all over the country, it
has affected JnU culture roughly. The predicament of the university is, it has
a multidimensional impact of such sort of politics. When common students
organize a movement demanding something very logically, student organization of
ruling party like Chaatra League deliberately beleaguers the student very
atrociously, hampers the movement as well as turns it into violence willingly. Moreover,
unlike other progressive student organizations, Chaatra League or other ruling
party’s concern organization always make chaos such as eve teasing, conflict
for post and domination, aggression on other groups, extortion and so on.
Finally, the most significant crisis is unavailability of accomodation
advantages. Because of this problem, not only students are suffering but also
teachers as well as other stuffs are having bastion to make their best efforts.
No need to be critical, rather through a
general sense we can have a perception that it advert many lacks of the
institution. Despite being students of the university, they have to live in
other places instead of the area of campus due to the accomodation crisis. In a
result, in this very busy as well as densely populated city, student are
deliberately bound to live in a far distance from their campus and this is why
they are not being able to be connected with their campus always though it is
very necessary to maintain a university culture including extra curriculum activities.
It is very common, either teachers or students are often late that interrupt
the classes. Simultaneously, there is no tie or strong connection among the students
as they have no option to live together. In a result, they cannot share each
other their creative thinking, plans, knowledge and other activities which may help
them to dream big.
In contrary, JnU has achieved a lot. Despite having a lot of
crises, it has already become the second choice for higher studies in the
country. Besides this, the most successful story is the JnU student named to the
second position in the battle of Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) which adverts
the bright future of the university. In addition, many cultural activities are
being practiced here by some renewed groups like UDICHI. Students are getting
involved with many more practices like protest against inequality, gender violence,
social stigma, racism and so on. The crucial thing behind JnU’s success is, the
university has a number of young teachers and their friendly relationship with
students.
In concluding summary, we can say, in spite of having so many
crises and limitations JnU is running towards success rapidly and as long as
the administration can maintain the process, the institution will be marked as
highly demanded educational institute of the country.
